Research on the air quality in Passive houses and free ventilated houses has shown that the indoor air in passive houses contains less microorganisms and allergens than in free ventilated houses, less CO2-peaks and less other pollution-rates. This is due to the filtering of the incoming air, to the thorough steady ventilation and to the lack of moisture in the airtight and thermal bridge free construction.

A correct planning, construction and maintenance of the ventilation system in Passive houses is important, also the regular hygienic checks and the change of filters. Critical components are the intake air opening, the filters and the air-to-soil heat exchanger (if applied). Also applied construction material and furnishing also has an impact on (the prevention of) the air pollution.
